Well, I just happen to have a 2500 watt Proven wind turbine on my property. I took great efforts to get it far away from both my home and eyesight - just because I thought the wife wouldn't
want to either hear it or see it. Mind you, that cost me a substantial amount of money-- the extra large gauge wire just about did me in.
The amazing thing, the Proven turbine rotates at 300 rpm so even when the winds outside are in excess of 75mph, the only sound I hear from my garage (130 feet away) is a soft "whoosh whoosh". In
effect the sounds of the wind passing by my garage is much louder than the sound emanating from the Proven. The other thing, is that whenever it is windy, I want to look at the turbine because it is one
of those things that just naturally draws your attention. So now, I have to make a great effort just to go out to see it turn. Moral: given the right turbine, put it somewhere you can enjoy all that
"free" electricity it makes for you.
I chose the Proven wind turbine because I contacted a "well known wind expert" several years ago and that person suggested I look into several different "heavy metal" wind turbine
manufacturers. On all the turbines I looked at, the wind speed to power output graphs showed the power outputs dropping off at winds speeds past 28-30mph, and steadily declines downward at increasing
wind speeds. The Proven's design is such that the power output peaks at 2500 watts at 26 mph and continues that output up to 150+ mph windspeed!!!!!
The Proven is what the insiders of the wind industry call "Heavy Metal" this turbine is built to last! It's towertop weight is 440lbs! You need a pretty stout tower to hold this one!
Unfortunately, heavy metal usually equates to expensive- an in this case- that was true. The whole system of tower, turbine and controller ran me about $10,000 for a 2500 watt turbine (In 1999). I have
had it in the air for 2.5 years and have never had a problem. If I had neighbors, I wouldn't be concerned that they would bothered by it, unless they had a visual problem, which I would find rather
unlikely.
Noise from Turbines is a common complaint. It's best to get recommendations from other people before you purchase anything.
